Malaysia Passport Photo Requirements & Guidelines

Two things about a Malaysia passport photo trip people up before they even reach the camera. The size is 35 × 50 mm — taller than the 35 × 45 mm used almost everywhere else — and the background is now plain white, not the blue Malaysia used for years. A photo booth left on its default UK setting produces the wrong size; an old habit produces the wrong colour.

The specification, at a glance

The 35 × 50 size — and the booth trap

Malaysia's 35 × 50 mm format is genuinely uncommon. Most countries, most photo booths, and most online tools default to 35 × 45 mm, so the single most frequent Malaysian mistake is submitting a photo that's 5 mm too short. If you use a booth or a studio, say explicitly that you need the Malaysian 35 × 50 mm size, not the standard one.

The taller frame also changes where your head sits. Malaysia wants a smaller head than usual — roughly 25–30 mm chin to crown, only about 50–60% of the frame, with around 10 mm of space above your head. If you crop to the "face fills the frame" instinct that works for other countries, a Malaysian photo comes out too zoomed-in. Rather than guess, you can create your Malaysia passport photo at the exact 35 × 50 size with the head correctly placed.

White, not blue

For years Malaysian passport photos were taken against a blue background, and many people still assume that's the rule. It isn't any more: the current biometric international passport requires a plain white background, and blue is no longer accepted. Off-white, cream and grey are rejected too, so the wall has to read as genuinely white — evenly lit, no shadow behind the head.

If your only option at home is a coloured wall, replacing the background with a clean white is more reliable than fighting your lighting.

Glasses, expression, and head coverings

Malaysia's counters use live facial capture, and under current biometric practice glasses are best removed. Older guidance allowed them if the eyes were fully visible with no glare, but the safe, rejection-proof choice today is to take them off — sunglasses and tinted lenses are never allowed.

Expression

Keep it neutral — mouth closed, no smile, eyes open and looking straight at the camera, hair clear of your forehead and eyes.

Head coverings

A hijab or tudung is permitted for religious reasons, provided the full face is visible from chin to forehead and both edges of the face show. A darker, plain scarf photographs better against the white background than a pale one.

A 35 × 50 mm colour print on quality photo paper, white background, head 25–30 mm, taken within the last six months. This is what you bring to an Immigration counter, where a live capture is also taken.

The online renewal

If you renew through MyOnline Passport, you upload a digital photo. Malaysia doesn't publish an exact public pixel spec, but a white-background JPEG around 413 × 591 px at 300 DPI is the commonly accepted target. The validator rejects portrait-mode and beauty-filter shots, so upload a flat, unedited photo rather than a phone "portrait" image.

How Malaysia compares
