Malawi Passport Photo Requirements & Guidelines

A Malawi passport photo has an unusual catch: the picture that ends up on the chip isn't the print you bring. Malawi issues its e-passport through live biometric enrolment — your photo, fingerprints and signature are captured at the Immigration office — so the 35 × 45 mm print you prepare is mainly for the paper application form.

That doesn't make the print rules optional. It means you need to arrive looking exactly as a compliant photo requires, because the same standard is applied to the live capture. This guide covers both.

Why Malawi is different: the photo is captured in person

Many countries let you upload a photo online. Malawi doesn't — the biometric passport is enrolled in person, with the official photo taken on the spot alongside your fingerprints and signature. The printed photos you submit go with the paper form, not onto the passport chip.

The practical consequence is simple: how you present yourself at the counter matters as much as the print. Turn up as a compliant photo would look — plain clothes, no glasses, hair off the face — and both the form print and the live capture pass together. The rules that still decide your photo

White, and genuinely white

The background must be plain white, evenly lit, with no shadow behind your head. A wall that looks white to the eye often photographs as grey or cream — standing half a metre away and lighting evenly keeps it clean. Monochrome, tinted, or shadowed backgrounds are rejected.

Glasses come off

Glasses are not permitted unless you have a documented medical reason. Tinted, dark, and non-prescription lenses are always refused. For almost everyone, the simplest move is to take them off before the photo and the capture.

Both ears, full face

Malawi expects the full face, with both ears visible where your hairstyle allows, and a neutral expression — mouth closed, eyes open, looking straight at the camera. Everyday street clothing is required; uniforms aren't accepted, with the usual exception for daily-worn religious dress.

The printed photo you still need

Even with live capture, you submit printed photos with the application, so they have to be right: a clean 35 × 45 mm colour print on photo paper, head about 34–36 mm chin to crown, taken within the last six months, with no retouching or digital alteration.

Because the head-size figures aren't published as an exact millimetre table, the safest approach is to hit the standard biometric proportion — face filling roughly 75% of the frame — rather than guess. Getting it right before you go

You don't need a studio, but you do need to look the part. Use soft, even light from a window, stand off a plain white wall so you cast no shadow, keep the camera at eye level, and hold a genuinely neutral expression. Take your glasses off, keep hair clear of your eyes and ears, and wear ordinary clothes. Do that once for your print and you'll sit for the live capture without a reshoot.
